Hasan Patel’s Newsroom Insights for Strategic Communication

In the world of communications, there is a distinct advantage to having a “newsroom heart.” For Hasan Patel, his career wasn’t built in a boardroom—it was forged at the BBC and Al Jazeera.

In our latest episode of The Comms Collective, Hasan joins us to discuss how he transitioned from a digital journalist to a strategic leader, and why he still uses a journalist’s “BS detector” to guide his biggest career moves.

The Journalist’s Dilemma: Paycheck vs. Purpose

One of the most revealing moments in our chat was when Hasan discussed the “glittering prizes” of high-finance PR. He was offered a lucrative role handling communications for a hedge fund in Dubai, a job many would consider the pinnacle of corporate success.

But Hasan’s journalism background gave him a different perspective.

“People did say to me I was a bit mad to say no… but it’s more to do with a sense of impact and change. My social conscience kicks in.”

Instead of chasing a tax-free salary, Hasan chose to “shift the dial” on real-world issues such as mental health, academic research, and social mobility. For Hasan, if the story doesn’t have a soul, it isn’t worth telling.

Bridging the Gap: The “Reactive Newsroom” Approach

Hasan didn’t leave journalism behind; he brought the newsroom into the press office. At the University of Birmingham, he famously turned a traditional PR team into a reactive news engine.

He explains that the “Why should I care?” test, the same one every News Editor uses, is the most powerful tool in a communicator’s kit. By ditching slow, planned campaigns in favour of quick, expert reactions to global events (like the resignation of Angela Merkel), Hasan secured prime coverage on BBC Radio 4 while others were still drafting press releases.

Real Stories, Not Stock Photos

This journalistic craving for authenticity led to the “Real Life, Real Stories” campaign at Birmingham Newman University. Hasan knew that a glossy brochure wouldn’t move the needle for a diverse, local student body.

Instead, he went looking for the “scoop”:

  • The Bangladeshi taxi drivers completing law degrees.
  • The single mothers returning to education to become nurses.
  • The first-generation students inspiring their entire families.

By telling these “real” stories, the university didn’t just see a boost in recruitment; it climbed the social mobility rankings. It turns out that when you treat your audience with the respect a journalist would, they listen.

Leadership: A Marathon, Not a Sprint

Hasan is refreshingly candid about the challenges of moving from the fast-paced newsroom to senior leadership. He shared a powerful lesson about taking a high-level role for the title and the “pay packet” before he was ready, leading him to step back after 11 months to find a better “fit.”

His advice to the next generation of storytellers? “Life is a marathon, not a race.” Focus on the quality of your impact, not just the quantity of your clips.
